The White Hunter. African Memories and Representations is a publication produced on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition produced by FM Centre for Contemporary Art in Milan. It is not a traditional catalogue, nor does it represent a simple appendix to the exhibition, but it is rather a context in which the subjects of representation and memory are interrogated in another form.

The volume brings together previously unpublished contributions, presents writings from the artists in the exhibitions, texts by activists and intellectuals, and archive material about Italian colonial history that are only partially present in the exhibition.

In this way, it is aimed to delineate the theoretical and political frame of reference for the artistic practices and curatorial research, in line with the exhibition project's vocation.

This investigates the forms in which African art has been exhibited and the contribution that it has made to the construction of an image of Africa, focusing on the Italian context.

The project began with an exploration of the antique and contemporary African art present in private Italian collections. All the works on show, apart from a nucleus of photographs loaned by the Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain, are effectively the property of private Italian collectors.
33 are the works of anonymous, antique traditional art, mostly dated before the 20th century, and 35 are the contemporary artists represented on show, with art works produced between 1950 and 2017.

The historic period covered simbolically starts with the white hunter, a frame taken from Pays Barbare, an extraordinary film work dedicated to the Italian colony history by the artists Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi. It ends with the wreck of the migrant, represented by the young Tunisian artist Nidhal Chamekh which recalls our dramatic present times.
